With the exception of Bargaining Unit 8, domestic partners are
recognized as dependents and the employee is eligible to transfer
their fee waiver benefit to their domestic partner.
NOTE: All eligible non-represented and represented
employees may enroll in a maximum of two (2) courses or six (6)
units, whichever is greater, per term. Exception to this unit limitation
is made only for employees on leave. For more information, contact
Darcy Adams in Human Resources at dadams@calpoly.edu,
call (805) 756-2472, or read Technical
Letter – HR/Benefits 2004-06, Attachment A.
Taxable Education Benefits
Under current IRS regulations, the dependent fee waiver benefit
is not taxable for undergraduate dependent children or spouse coursework.
The benefit is taxable for graduate dependent children, spouse,
and undergraduate and graduate domestic partner coursework. This
taxation is against the employee who transfers the benefit and occurs
via withdrawal on their check warrant. Please review Technical
Letter – HR/Benefits 2004-06 for complete information
regarding these regulations.
